happy curls.
a curly hair product subscription box.
it started with an idea.
A quick google search can tell you that curly hair products are EXPENSIVE. When I first started my natural journey, I remember constantly struggling to find the right products for my hair type and wasting a lot of money in the process. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought an expensive hair product, only to end up using it once and never again. And I know I’m not alone. I created the project, Happy Curls, in attempt to mitigate that problem, and offer an affordable way to try new hair products.
the original project.
I originally started this idea for my class “Bringing Media To Market”, where we were instructed to come up with a unique business idea, then create an effective marketing strategy including mock-up social media profiles and posts, ad campaigns, and email campaigns.
Tools: MailChimp, Photoshop, InDesign
evolving the idea.
The next semester, I was presented with an opportunity to make any type of website of my choosing for my “Web Design and Development” class. I thought it was a great chance to build on this idea and create a website for it!
So I created a new pitchboard including a more detailed description of the product and its services, an addition of competitor websites and personas, and just a style guide of fonts, logo ideas, and a general color pallette.
Deliverables:
Personas
Wireframes
Prototype
Tools:
Balsamiq
Figma
Visual Studio Code
Github
reflection.
A few things changed from the wireframes due to my limited knowlege of HTML & CSS at the time. However, it was my first big web design project and I’m very proud of all the knowlege I’ve gained from it. A lot of things I incorporated, I learned on my own through YouTube tutorials and forums like StackOverflow. I was even able to teach myself a bit of Javascript!
If I could change anything, though, I would conduct real research on real users so that I could get accurate information on the needs and wants instead of just assuming. Then from there, do user testing and redesign as needed.

I love opportunities to connect and strengthen my design skills and build new skills along the way. So, feel free to shoot me an email!
